Companies in North Jersey have announced a whopping 441 layoffs this week. Toshiba America Consumer Products, LLC, along with manufacturers of cardboard and cosmetics are among those affected.

President Container Group, a cardboard packaging manufacturer, in Moonachie, will see a reduction of 234 jobs in early October. Toshiba will cut 60 jobs towards the end of September.

Larry Grossboard, a principal of President Container Group, says that the company outgrew their present facilities and had planned to relocate for two years. He also said that the company is expected to grow 20 percent by 2012 after their New York facility is up and running in 2011.

Layoffs were reported to the labor department in North Jersey in compliance with the federal WARN Act, as well as state laws requiring that companies give a 60 day notice of layoffs. Though most of the layoffs will go through, it is possible that the afflicted companies change plans, and keep some workers on.
