Due to major cuts in funding from the state and county, the Buffalo & Erie County Library system said it plans to cut more than 130 jobs.

The Buffalo library system currently employs about 1,000 people that make up 405 full-time equivalent positions.  According to Business First of Buffalo, the layoffs will be made based on civil service seniority and union contracts.

The plan was hashed out by library executives and a consulting company. The Buffalo & Erie County Library system is slated to have a budget of $17.4 million in 2011, which is well below last year’s budget of $27.5 million.

In other cost-cutting moves, the library plans to trim its hours of operations as well as staff and services at its 37 branches.
