As the Continental/United Airlines moves forward, it’s not surprise that some redundancies will be rectified through layoffs.  In the latest round of cuts, 500 clerical and management positions will be eliminated at Continental’s Houston offices.

Many of these jobs will be done out of United’s existing Chicago office instead.  Meanwhile, the company says that none of the jobs that deal with the public, such as ticketing, gate staff, and pilots, will be cut in Houston.

Houston Mayor Mary Parker had this to say about the job cuts and the merger: “This is not unexpected.  However, we continue to believe that, in the end, Houston will have a net gain in jobs as a result of the Continental/United merger.”
