Military veterans have an unemployment that is higher than the national average, particularly those who entered the military early. Even if they graduated high school, they lack the higher education or work experience of their civilian peers. Democrat Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is attempting to address that issue with the “Hiring Heroes Act,” which will provide job training and services for veterans entering the civilian workforce. There are currently similar voluntary programs in place; Gillibrand is trying to make it a requirement by the end of the year, when Obama’s current plans predict the return of almost 55,000 troops.
