August Retail Sales Mixed, but September Could Be Highly Promotional

Despite the enormity of widespread disruption caused by Hurricane Irene, several retailers still reported higher sales during August. Predictions are that the month of September should witness higher retail sales due to the carry over demand backlog from August that did not have the bustling back-to-school shopping tempo. Overall though back-to-school and back-to-college spending, the estimates by National Retail Federation predict, are likely to be slightly lower compared to the last year.
