For those of you who are not familiar with the city of Lake Elsinore you will find it in the state of California. Like many schools in the state of California there are going to be some serious job cuts in order to right the budget.

In Lake Elsinore there will be 73 jobs cut from the Lake Elsinore Unified School District. In a unanimous vote the schools have decided to cut back on 73 workers in order to shore up the holes in their budget. The 73 workers to be cut, many of whom are in the transportation department, either as drivers or support staff.

The cuts, which will take place at the end of the current school year, are designed to shore up the schools budget, which has a $15 million hole for the upcoming school year. These cuts are actually compromises after a previous attempt to cut all home to school transportation in the district as a way to save funds.

For those of you who are not familiar with the current cuts to the California school system here is a look at some of the current cuts being made to California schools:

Job Cuts in Berkley included the following: “The Berkeley Unified School District is getting ready to let go of teachers. This time is was 48 educators who found themselves on the receiving end of a layoff notice from their employer. The layoff notices, which come into effect for the next school year and not immediately like many pink slips, is going to affect 20 interim teachers and 28 teachers who are regular members of the staff.  The layoff notices are being sent out as part of a worst-case scenario plan. The schools are hoping that when the budget comes in from the state level that fewer layoffs will have to occur. That having been said the way that the notification system works the school must prepare for the worst and hope they do not need to cut as many jobs

The Berkeley schools are expecting to face at least a $3 million revenue deficit and that is if a proposed tax initiative goes through. If the voters cut it down in November then the schools may be looking at more like a $6.8 million dollar budget hole that will need to be plugged up before the new school year begins in September.”

In Orange County the cuts were more vigorous: “As you may have noticed from our earlier posts the state of the California schools is precarious at best and it looks like things are going to get a lot worse before they get better. This the time school district that is taking the hit is Orange County. The Orange County school districts sent out layoff notices to a minimum of 1,517 workers, though some sources are estimating that more notices did go out over the course of the week. In that mix are about 244 classroom teachers.

The notices let the workers know that unless serious changes are made to the state budget, or their unions become ready to make some serious concessions, these workers could be out of a job when the school year ends in June.

The prelayoff notices, know as WARN notices, were given out in accordance with the state deadline, which occurred on Thursday. This deadline, which every school in the state must abide by requires a significant amount of advance notice before a school district employee can be cut.”
