Hewlett Packard has announced this Monday that its going ahead with its campaign to liquidate 27,000 positions by striking down 100 in Rio Rancho. The HP spokesperson explained that this is part of their global plan to deliver better results for customers and to simplify their business process, but what he meant was that this is just the next step in a desperate attempt to revive the staggering giant. With the harsh market against competitor’s tablets, HP just isn’t cutting it – even Microsoft is worried – so they attempted getting a new CEO, and when that didn’t deliver enough magic, they went down to the next step such businesses take: mass layoffs. Outsourcing would be the next step.

Jon Barela, the New Mexico Economic Development Secretary said Monday that he was “saddened” by the layoffs, noting that HP is a “well-established brand that we hope will be able to utilize this reorganization to make a strong comeback, flourish again, and create more jobs throughout the state.”

A general concern with technological companies of this sort seems to be panning out: the older staff near retirement are eliminated. Mass lay-offs offer an alibi for eliminating such positions, making room for the flesh blood of college graduates who are less expensive and often up to pace on the latest technology. Meanwhile, the axed staff aged 35 or older find it difficult to secure similar employment.
