As part of a larger plan to reduce expenses, Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan has eliminated 23 managers’ positions.

In November, Sparrow announced it would seek buyouts from non-union staff; according to hospital officials, 72 workers have accepted the offer.

The hospital, which is the flagship of the Sparrow Health System, is facing financial issues due to the declining economy, rising costs for people unable to pay their bills, and a reduction in elective procedures.

Sparrow Hospital is a 740 bed hospital, and is affiliated with nearby Michigan State University. Sparrow Hospital is the Regional Center for pediatrics, cancer care, including radiation therapy, trauma care, neurological care, high-risk obstetrics and neonatal intensive care.
