In anticipation of the 2010 nationwide census, the US Census Bureau is hiring in Washington State, with as many as 1,200 temp jobs in Eastern Washington alone.

These jobs pay between about $12 and $15 an hour, and hiring is occurring right now.

Applicants must call 1-866-861-2010. They will have to pass a thirty minute test, and must be a US citizen. The jobs would start as soon as this March.

“Working for the Census Bureau and working on the Census really is fulfilling, and I know that there’s a lot of people out there that have aunts and uncles and mothers and fathers who at one time or another here worked on the census. It’s amazing when you talk to people,” said Brian Kennedy, Regional US Census Director.

Besides population numbers, data collected by the census bureau is crucial to every region in America. They determine how much federal grant money a region is allotted. The census also decides if a state can add another congressman.
