Wal-Mart Stores, the world’s largest retailer, plans to eliminate up to 800 jobs at its corporate headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas.

The 5% reduction covers some real estate positions as Wal-Mart opens fewer US stores this year. Some apparel-buying and planning jobs will be shifted to New York City.

The cuts will also include marketing and support administration jobs; retail positions won’t be affected.

Wal-Mart employs about 2.2 million globally, including 14,000 people in Bentonville and 1.45 million in the U.S.

The retail monopsony plans to open up to 140 US stores this year, creating tens of thousands of jobs.
