United TechnologiesPratt & Whitney Canada will cut 1,000 jobs, or about 10% of the small-engine maker’s worldwide workforce, as business-jet production slows.

About 5,500 of Pratt & Whitney Canada’s jobs are in Quebec. Pratt & Whitney is a division of Hartford, Connecticut’s United Technologies.

The cuts at Pratt & Whitney come as United Technologies, which also makes Sikorsky helicopters and Otis elevators, accelerates cost-cutting plans in the global economic meltdown.

Founded in 1928, Pratt & Whitney Canada has dominated its sector of the world market for aircraft engines.
