missouri20flagMass Layoffs hit Missouri hard in the last quarter of ’08. There were a total of 99 mass layoffs in the Midwestern state during the final three months of 2008, which meant more than 12,678 workers were left without jobs. That is the highest quarterly job loss on record for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, as they began collecting the data in 1995.

Kansas saw 25 mass layoffs which meant 2,749 workers were left with jobs in the fourth quarter of ’08. In the third quarter, Kansas saw less than half of the amount of mass layoffs, with a recorded 8.

Across the United States there were a total of 3,140 mass layoffs during the fourth quarter of ’08. That equated to a total of over 500,000 displaced workers, a great indicator of the shaky economy.
