A new program in the state of Michigan allows laid off and unemployed auto workers to train for new careers in the film industry. The program is made possible through a partnership of Oakland Community College, a school just outside of Detroit, and S3 Entertainment Group, a film production company.

The Michigan economy has provided something of a perfect storm for the program. Just as Ford, GM, and other big American auto companies are experiencing incredibly hard times, the film industry in Michigan is flourishing as a result of in-state incentives for production companies who film in the Wolverine State. As an example, “Gran Torino,” a Clint Eastwood movie produced by S3 Entertainment, was filmed in the state. Last week, the Governor’s office said they expected 6,000 new jobs to be created by the new industry.

“Basically, we’ll be helping people get the industry experience they need to get jobs,” said Jeff Spilman, managine partner in S3 Entertainment. The courses are taught by film industry professionals who either work in Michigan or Hollywood. “In the end, you’re not just learning, you are being taught by the very folks who will ultimately be able to hire you here in Michigan,” he said. “So while it’s training, it’s really job creation.”
