California’s Dry Creek School District may be sending out almost 60 layoff notices in March, as they face a large budget shortfall.

The final details of the budget gap are uncertain and lawmakers in Sacramento have not yet reached a deal on the state budget; however, school officials are anticipating the worst.

Dry Creek trustees are facing $4 million dollars in cuts between the current school year, as well as the ’09-’10 budget.

Trustee Diane Howe said she the board was hopeful the turnout won’t be as bad as it may look now.

“The law requires us by March 15 to notify teachers,” Howe said on Monday. “We have to act for the safety of the district.”

The layoffs may be voted on at a meeting on Thursday. They are anticipated as the first round of layoffs for teachers amongst several school districts in the area before the March deadline hits.

School officials are saying this is the worst budget outlook for public education they have ever seen as the preliminary state budget threatened to cut $8.6 billion from public schools, sources say.
