Mazda, a Ford Motor affiliate, is eliminating jobs across its US operations. The Hiroshima, Japan-based automaker laid off 110 workers at Mazda North America.

Mazda employs about 800 people in the United States.

Most of the firings occurred at the brand’s US headquarters in Irvine, California, where 340 people work. Other cuts were made at the R&D and design centers in Southern California. Layoffs also were made at the five regional offices.

In 2008 Mazda sales were down 10.7% compared to 2007.
