A district staff report from the San Francisco Unified School District reports that roughly 362 instructors and 144 administrators will be laid off from the city’s school system.  The layoffs are expected to include 74 elementary school teachers, 58 middle school teachers, 64 high school teachers, nine associate superintendents, and 38 assistant principles.  By law, the layoff notices must be sent out by March 15, but many of those layoffs can be rescinded if San Francisco can find more money.

Kim-Shree Maufus, SFUSD board President, was optimistic that such money could be found through Proposition G, San Francisco’s fund that sets aside money for schools during tough times.  She also expected money could be found from the federal stimulus package.

The district, which normally has an annual budget of about $369 million, will receive $24 million less from the state of California to fund operations.  State spending for SFUSD will drop from $8,784 per student to $8,404 per student next year.
