Contra Costa Schools to Lay Off 33

The school district for West Contra Costa County, California, located near San Francisco, has voted to lay off 33 classified personnel.

Representatives from the teachers union and Public Employees Local 1, which represents the district’s classified employees, oppose the firings.

The board also moved to increase class sizes.

Educators are responding to California state budget cuts. Possible federal stimulus funds that would save jobs have not been announced.
