San Francisco sealSan Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom has announced that 1,000 city workers will lose their jobs, after the city’s biggest union rejected $38 million in wage concessions.

The layoffs will affect all city departments. The city has already cut 262 workers this year. It employs 29,000.

The Service Employees International Union Local 1021, which represents more than 11,000 city employees, rejected a plan that would have cut holiday pay.

The city’s $6.6 billion budget faces a projected $438 million deficit.

Layoff notices will be issued May 26th, and go into effect at the end of July.

“Frisco.” There, I said it. You all can complain now.
