prattwhitney_160x120Jet engine maker Pratt & Whitney is reducing its Connecticut workforce by about nine percent, trasnsferring 1000 jobs to Georgia, Singapore and Japan. The reductions will happen over the next two years and it’s unclear for now how many jobs will move to Georgia and how many will be sent overseas.

Although best known for manufacturing jet engines for aircraft, Pratt & Whitney also builds gas turbines, marine turbines and rocket engines. The company employs over 38, 000 people world wide.

Update:

The Machinists Union, backed by the Attorney General of Connecticut, has asked a federal judge to stop the company from moving the jobs until the end of 2010, claiming that Pratt & Whitney did not negotiate in good faith.
