Tracy_CAThe city of Tracy, California is preparing to lay off 70 city employees as they attempt to balance their unhappy budget.

City finance director Zane Johnston said the layoffs would come in response to what is “simply a revenue problem. We have to reduce the size of our organization, there is no other alternative.

During the ‘09-‘10 fiscal year, the city expects $53 million in expenses with only $46 million in revenue. That leaves a $7 million deficit.

“We will have depleted all of our savings in two years,” Johnston said. “We have to ‘right-size’ our organization.” That phrase, “right-size,” means cutting around 70 jobs.

Though some of those positions are currently vacant, more than 60 city employees stand in employment limbo.
