iowa_160x120Governor Chet Culver of Iowa has ordered a ten percent spending cut after tax revenues came in shorter than expected. To meet this cut, state agencies will have to cut 1300 jobs. 529 of these jobs are currently vacant, but the remainder will come from layoffs. Agencies have until October 28th to submit their plans.

The Board of Regents, which oversees the three public universities in the state, has the option of either making spending cuts or increasing revenue, through tuition or other means. The legislature is not subject to the 10% reduction but plans to meet the same target anyway.
