iowa_160x120Although Whirlpool’s Amana plant in Iowa is adding 60 new jobs due to a new product line, the positions are being reserved for former employees.  In October of 2008 the plant laid off a total of 440 workers. In the next few weeks 90 will be recalled in order to handle the seasonal spike in refrigerator demand says division vice president Dan Smith.

“We are launching some great innovations in this refrigeration season,” said Dan Smith. “It’s our hope that we will gain enough volume to get all of our folks called back from layoff.”

The formerly laid-off workers will be coming back making the same pay rate as when the were released.

Smith stated “We are committed to keeping jobs in Iowa, keeping jobs in the United States, so we need to make changes and make improvements to drive that sustainability.”
