siemensSiemens AG plans to create 825 engineering and manufacturing jobs within five years in North Carolina through a $135-million expansion of its facility in Charlotte.

The company plans to turn its North Carolina division into a global production hub for a gas-powered turbine used at electric utility plants, the Associated Press reports. The proposal was approved by a state incentives committee on Thursday.

“Over the next five years, we expect employment at the Charlotte site to grow to nearly 1,800 people, with more than 1,000 of those positions new to Charlotte. With this move we’re pushing ahead with our growth strategy in the U.S., which is our most important single-country market,” Siemens AG chief executive officer Peter Loescher said in a statement.

Siemens is slated to receive up to $22.75 million in tax breaks and grants for the expansion. According to the AP, a county entity to promote development is also poised to lend Siemens up to $120 million in low-interest loans.

Siemens AG is an electronics and electrical engineering company operating in the industry, energy and healthcare sectors. According to its web site, it is the world’s largest provider of environmental technologies with nearly one-third of its total revenue coming from green products and solutions.
