californiaflag_160x120Sacramento County is set to cut 723 positions when its fiscal year starts July 1. That follows a similar number of cuts that took place during the current fiscal year.

The Sacramento Business Journal reports Sacramento County, which is facing a $166.5 million budget deficit, has reduced its workforce from 14,500 employees to 12,500 since fiscal year 2009. Of the 723 positions set to be cut this summer, 119 are vacant, meaning 604 people are about to be out of a job.

According to the report, the $166.5 million shortfall represents 8 percent of the county’s $2 billion general fund.

The proposed cuts are to be felt across all departments.

The county has five weeks to hammer out deals with unions and other bargaining representatives to try and close the gap, the Business Journal reports. The Board of Supervisors will receive a final recommendation in June.
