californiaflag_160x120Unemployment claims in the state of California have experienced a surge in the past week. Claims increased by almost 20,000, with layoffs coming mostly from the service sector during the month of July.

Unemployment claims data that is collected weekly does not include citizens who are no longer eligible for unemployment. Thus 99ers and those who have exhausted their unemployment benefits are not included in the increased numbers. It solely represents those who are go through, or are going through, the claims process.
