Berkshire Health Systems on Friday informed employees at its Pittsfield, New York medical center that 124 positions would be eliminated by the end of September. The layoffs represent about 4.6% of Berkshire’s 2,700-person payroll. Those laid off will include nurses and technicians.

Berkshire blamed the layoffs on a falling number of patients at the facility and lower reimbursements from health insurance.

It’s been a difficult twelve months for Berkshire, which cut 65 positions in September of last year. Due to decreased patient volume, revenue is down $11 million from the previous year.
