Post Views 0The United States has the highest rate of incarceration in the world, and states are looking for ways to curb the ever-growing costs of prisons. Spending on prisons increased from $63 billion in 1997 to $74 billion in 2007. Some states are looking at ways to reduce the prison population, such as early release, while others are looking at the possibility of privatizing the prison system. Ironically, the budget crunch comes at a time when the violent crime rate in the US is at a recent historical low.
