Survey Shows Small Business Owners Pessimistic About Economy

In the past, small business owners have been at the forefront of the climb out of a recession. But this time may be different. Many small business owners are pessimistic about a return to productivity because sales have not rebounded. As a result, business owners are reluctant to hire more staff, which in turn creates less sales. It is generally agreed the housing market crash precipitated the recession, but the current slump is due to a lack of confidence in government, according to William Dunkelberg, chief economist at the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). A NFIB survey indicated only seven percent of respondents thought conditions would be better six months down the road.
