Amidst the worries, there was a glimpse of hope that was presented during the month of September. September saw the employment numbers rise higher than projected. Employers hired 103,000 workers throughout the month. It was projected by economists that only 65,000 jobs would be filled during the month so with numbers that are almost double many people are feeling a little relieved. Since the recession began, 8.6 million positions have been lost. Since then only a weak 2.1 million have been recovered by workers. That means that are still an astounding 6.5 million jobs that have not been refilled. With the population increasing so quickly the only way that the economy will be able to keep up is if 150,000 jobs are created each month. That is not going to be easy to do.

Even though the job rate was nearly double the projected rate there is still a shadow that is cast over the number. 45,000 of the members of the total were employees that had been on strike with Verizon. That means that nearly half of the total was employees that were still employed so the actual growth was not nearly as high as it looks. This is very discouraging for many people who are simply trying to find a way to support themselves and their family. The number of people who are having to go on government assistance or get unemployment is astounding. It is getting harder and harder for people to believe that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

The unemployment rate is holding steady at 9.1%. Economists predict that the unemployment rate will not rise throughout the remainder of the year and that the usual amount of hires will take place. During the winter months, seasonal positions often come available. This is due to the raise in traffic at retailers during the holiday seasons. Many of the jobs are just part-time positions but most of the full-time positions that are being acquired are starting at the part-time level. There are some unemployed persons who have become so discouraged by the rate of employment opportunities that they have actually stopped actively looking for employment. It is going to be very difficult for the U.S. to get out of its economic position if more jobs are not created. Many employers are discouraged and weary to hire new workers for fear that they will not have a demand for their goods. The less demand for the goods the less chance for employment of new workers. Employers are now tending to use the employees that they have rather than hire and train new ones because they simply cannot afford to take the chance. They will wait until they absolutely have to hire additional help before they will.
