Young People Hit Hardest by Unemployment

The economy is hitting the country even harder day then before. Younger workers seem to be hit even harder with the economic issues. The recession has hit everyone hard but most experts are saying it has hit the younger generation the hardest. Younger workers are among the people who are not showing an increase in employment, according to the Orlando Sentinel. “It’s really pretty depressing,” said Heather Boushey, a senior economist with the Center for American Progress. “It’s as bad as it’s been for decades no matter how you measure it.”

A young lady by the name of Wendy Noto can tell the world just how hard it is to find a job in today’s economy. She has worked several jobs in her life from the age of 15. She has worked in a variety of settings as well. However, as the economy began to hit rock bottom she seemed to have trouble finding jobs in her niche. This was really frustrating considering she has always worked and never had a problem getting hired. “I used to walk in and get hired on the spot,” she said. “Now your résumé gets stuck in a stack of 500, and you never hear anything.”

Things are getting even tougher because she is now a single mother and struggling to make ends meet. Noto is an advocate for equal employment and protesting against such inequalities. “I need to support my daughter,” she said. “I’ll pick up trash, clean up puke … whatever. I’ll do what’s necessary.” It seems as though younger workers always struggle the most when the economy hits. It seems as though, those who are 24 and younger are hit the hardest with unemployment issues. Usually the results are long term.

A few reports have come out in the past years that explain this issue in a little more detail. Some of the reports exclaim that it may be years before a fresh college graduate reaches their full potential after graduation, money wise. “The ‘scarring effects’ of prolonged unemployment,” the report said, “can be devastating over a worker’s career.” Thankfully, the past few months have shown an increase in the amount of young people being hired into the labor market. “It’s too early to tell,” said Heidi Shierholz of the Economic Policy Institute. “The numbers are still kind of jumpy.”

People are ready to see a change in the economy. This goes for young and old people alike. People are taking whatever jobs they can to help support their families. Families are cutting back just so they can survive during the economy. If it means cleaning offices or even stocking shelves, then you can guarantee that there is someone doing it. However, anytime would be a great time for the economy to pick back up and show its fullest potential.
