UPS to Cut 400+ Jobs

Shipping giant, UPS is getting ready to let go of more than 400 of their workers. This cut, which will affect workers in the northern Kentucky logistics center, is being attributed directly to the loss of a contract with a on e-tailer will affect 433 workers. Most of the jobs to be lost will be warehouse workers and other lower paid hourly jobs.

A spokesman for UPS, Norman Black, had the following to say about the reasons for the cut in a statement released by the company,  “We’ve had a wonderful collaboration with Zulily for inventory management and order distribution to help them grow as an e-tailer. They’ve made a business decision to coordinate fulfillment and distribution in-house.” Until now Zulily, a clothing retailer, has been using UPS to deal with all of their shipping and logistics.

Of course this is no the only delivery service to cut jobs in the last 12 months. The US Postal Service recently considered cutting up to 30,000 jobs from the payrolls. For those of you who missed the earlier coverage here is an excerpt:

The U.S. postal service is getting ready to do something completely unprecedented in its history. They are getting ready to layoff members of their staff. In what is an expected move for an organization that is just now able to layoff workers for the first time in its history, the numbers are not small. If all goes according to the current plan about 30,000 postal workers are expected to be out of a job at some point in 2012.

Where are the job cuts coming from?

To start with hundreds of rural post offices were give notification, over the summer months, that they would most likely be shut down at some point during the 2012-year. In addition several processing centers were given more recent notice that are going to be closed during the year to come. While we do not have a full list of locations at the current moment some of the locations include Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Topeka, Kansas.”

The job cuts will not take immediate effect. The company will begin layoffs in the middle of March and end in April. So the workers who are going to be out of a job will have some time to figure out an alternative plan before they are cut free.

Of the 400 jobs to be cut, about 100 of them were temporary workers, and they were not expecting to see any more from their work. Some of the jobs are coming from the management pool. The employees who are going to be out of a job will get help from the company in the form of severance packages, as well as job-placement services, in addition to their unemployment benefits.
