The odds are good that unless you live in the Omaha area you do not know much about Lakeside Hospital. So for those of us who don’t live around those parts here is a look at how the hospital describes itself:

“Welcome to Lakeside Hospital, West Omaha’s only full-service hospital. We believe that patient-focused care heals the body, mind and spirit of every person. Our campus, designed for patients, sets the tone for a comfortable, less stressful hospital stay. As one of the most technologically advanced hospitals in the world, we provide a full range of services including: maternity, cancer and surgery care as well as diagnostics and emergency services.”

Well, the hospital is getting ready to get rid of 50 of its workers. All of the workers who are going to be cut are full time, though for now that is all that we really know about the cuts. The company is not breaking down any details about exactly which staffers are going to be cut, or if the cuts are going to impact the numbers of the clinical staff or only members of the administrative staff of the facility.
What we do know about the cuts? Well we know that there is not enough cost savings here to close the gap in the budget that the hospital was dealing with. The hospital has a $3 million budget gap for the coming fiscal year.  Of course these cuts are only for the time being. The facility may have to make more cuts in order to get to right. They are not the only facility to have to cut jobs in order to stay afloat. For those of you who have missed out on our earlier coverage here is a look at the controversy over 1000 + health care layoffs in Miami:

“Well, it looks like those workers are not going to go down without a fight. The union was looking to make the decision one of public opinion, instead of line items on a budget and it looks like they will get their wish. Earlier this week Miami-Dade County Commission Chairman Joe Martinez approved the union’s request to have a public hearing about the layoffs at the hospital.

The layoffs, which are slated to impact 1,117 workers w is expected by the unions and lawmakers to have significant impact on the care given to patients. The hospital has a plan to help with this, one that will require hiring on about 335 part time workers in order to meet its staffing needs for clinical units on an as needed basis, but many think that the plan will not be practical when it comes to meeting patient needs.
Of course, there are not the only cuts that Jackson Health System has made in the last couple of years. In November of 2011 the hospital system saw fit to layoff more than 200 workers in order to make its budget work and back in 2010 the hospital made some serious staffing cuts. 4,500 workers were let go in a massive layoff action by the facility. So who knows, this may be just one more in a long line of future cuts that the hospital system is making to try and squeeze every dime out of its budget. ”
