Lockheed Martin seems to have an ongoing relationship with job cuts. The company has announced that they are cutting back on several hundred jobs in the greater Orlando area. The jobs to be cut, which are from the logistics, training and missile operations, are currently unspecified in number but there is a good change that the company will be making a mass layoff action happen here.

For those of you who are not familiar with the idea of a mass layoff action here is a look at how the federal government defines the term, “The Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS) program collects reports on mass layoff actions that result in workers being separated from their jobs. Monthly mass layoff numbers are from establishments which have at least 50 initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) filed against them during a 5-week period. Extended mass layoff numbers (issued quarterly) are from a subset of such establishments—where private sector nonfarm employers indicate that 50 or more workers were separated from their jobs for at least 31 days.” The only good news is that under the terms of a mass layoff action the company must give workers several weeks of notice before they are put off of the payroll.

This is not the first time that the company has resorted to layoffs in order to set its budget to right this year. For those of you who missed out here is an excerpt that will bring you up to speed, “It looks like the management of Lockheed Martin is at it again. The company is going to be cutting back on workers yet again, and this time the numbers are pretty serious. The company is estimating that they are going to need to cut about 10,000 jobs when all is said and done. The threats of job cuts come from a proposed action by congress. In the propose action by congress goes through, a $1.2 trillion set of job cuts from the federal budget as part of a plan to help decrease the federal deficit, then the company is threat of job losses is very likely to become a reality.”

Before that the company made 400 definite layoffs in 2011, “Lockheed Martin is eliminating at least 400 jobs over the next two years, Bloomberg reports. The company is closing its manufacturing plant in Eagan, Minnesota and is moving work from its facility in Middle River, Maryland to other locations.” Another 470 job cuts were made in 2010, “Defense contractor Lockheed Martin informed 472 employees nationwide on Tuesday that they will be getting the axe. A plant in Owego, New York absorbed 104 of these layoffs. The range of the positions were experienced across the board, from floor workers to management.”

As you can imagine this is not the only company in the defense industry that is experiencing cuts that are impacting its staffing. For those of you who missed out on our earlier coverage here is a look at some of our cuts to B/E Aerospace, “Well, apparently the company is hoping to keep doing all of that without a number of their workers.  The company sent a WARN notice to the state of  Florida notifying them that they are going to be getting rid of 55 workers in the near future. A WARN notice is sent to the state before a mass layoff action is taken by the company.”
