To decrease American dependency on foreign oil is a major policy goal for at least two presidential administration. Currently, 45% of oil in the US come from foreign countries. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is a protection for the US in case sourcing foreign oil becomes impossible, such as in 1973 Arab oil embargo halted exports of oil to the US. This Reserve program will prevent disruptions to the US economy with reserves totaling 727 million barrels of oil in man-made salt domes in Texas and Louisiana.
