Sid Yudain, who was the creator of the community newspaper for Congress, which he called the “most important community in the world”, died at the age of 90. His wife said the cause of death was cancer. While he was a Hollywood reporter, he didn’t have a lot of professional journalism experience when he went to get his start working for Albert P. Morano, a Representative from Connecticut. He decided to start his newspaper when he learned that there really wasn’t a good way for Representatives and Senators to get information about each other. From his Congressional office, he funded the startup with $90 and began distributing a weekly paper. It became a bit of a small town “bible” which gave the every day goings on in Congress. It also covered more serious political issues such as filibusters and the changing rules for the Senate, as well as committee assignment manipulation. However, all of that was procedural, and there really wasn’t much initial legislative information at all in this newspaper. Yudain, in his early years, apparently used to get into a lot of fights with his siblings, who happened to have a journalistic bent, and they would go at each other with their typewriters rather than with physical violence. He’s clearly a memorable soul.
