Question: My son has been hearing claims around campus that students with a 4.0 grade-point-average have trouble finding jobs because employers consider them unsociable geeks. He is a very sociable, 4.0-G.P.A. chemical engineering senior. Is this perception for real or just a myth perpetuated by students who haven’t applied themselves to their studies?

Answer: This claim of “geekery” is probably a combination of both stereotype and jealousy. Stereotypes exist, but they aren’t necessarily pervasive or insurmountable when it comes to grades. Earning a 4.0 is an incredible accomplishment and your son should proudly regard his achievement.

Because most employers look for a combination of competency and compatibility with the culture, it will be important for your son to demonstrate a well-rounded personality and breadth of experience. He can accomplish this on his resume by highlighting extracurricular activities, leadership roles and work experience. The interview will provide the perfect opportunity for him to demonstrate his interpersonal skills and quell any doubts about his sociability.
