gm_160x120General Motors announced that about 1,900 workers at powertrain plants in North West Ohio will face temporary layoffs this month. This temporary layoffs come as the company tries to cope with a weak demand in an ailing economy.

Wanda Wellman, GM Spokeswoman said that 100 employees at the engine and transmission parts plants in Defiance, Ohio will be laid off for one week starting Monday. Another 1,200 workers at a factory 50 miles south west of Toledo will face a week-long layoff beginning on February 23. 600 workers at the Toledo’s powertrain plant will be on layoff during that week as well.

Last month, GM announced that they would eliminate a shift at their Lordstown complex in Ohio, which affected 800 employees.
