Mercedes BenzA Mercedes-Benz plant in Alabama will get $11.5 million in tax breaks for a $290 million expansion that won’t create any new jobs.

The Tuscaloosa Industrial Development Authority has approved the automaker’s request for the tax abatements, plus a $150,000 grant to prepare the site for construction. The project calls for a 200,000-square-foot expansion of the existing shop.

The tax breaks come as Mercedes has reduced its work force and cut production at the Vance plant, which employs about 3,000 people.

Mercedes created Alabama’s auto industry when came to the state in 1993, receiving $253 million in initial tax and other incentives.
