Household wealth in America has suffered huge declines largely because of the real estate bubble that burst in 2008. The total loss is nearly $8 trillion. Unlike the stock market, real estate has not been able to recover sufficiently to compensate for the deep losses brought on by inflated home values that spurred spending and discouraged saving. Americans are now saving more and spending less as real estate seems poised for a double dip.
