A woman in the state of Colorado is saying that she has been terminated from her job for apparently living in sin. Ashlie Simpson is a 31 year old woman who was working at the Colorado Christina University, which is located in Lakewood, Colorado. She worked for the University for just about 3 years, starting in September of 2009 and having been terminated in January of 2012. Simpson says she was asked if she was supposedly “living in sin” with her boyfriend and after answering, she ended up being terminated.

Simpson could not believe that the University felt so strongly about what she did in her personal time and her life away from work. Aside from being shocked about being asked questions on her personal life, she was absolutely distraught once she learned that she was fired because of her lifestyle choices. CCU decided not to discuss her termination any further and that is when she decided she needed to take legal action against them.

Elwyn Schaefer is working as the attorney for Simpson and says that by going on a coffee break, offensive questions ended up being asked by other staff members. Schaefer says that Simpson was asked about her lifestyle and whether or not she lived with her boyfriend. When trying to approach CCU to discuss things before going through with a lawsuit, they refused to cooperate which is why Simpson chose to file the suit on the 2nd of May at the Denver Country District Court. The lawsuit states that Simpson once got coffee and doughnuts with a married co-worker in the summer of 2010. There was never a relationship between the two, just a friendship, but Simpson believes that it was caused staff members to begin asking other questions about her personal life, ultimately leading to her being fired.

Simpson says that the vice president of the University told her that several team members were talking about the relationship between her and the married counselor, stating that she was being a distraction to his marriage, which would prevent her from being able to progress at the university. However, a counsel for the university, Steve Miller, says that Simpson is making it all up. Miller says that there are people out there who want to sue for whatever they can. He also says Simpson was fired for her lack of work and inability to get her job done correctly, not because of her personal lifestyle.

The lawsuit that Simpson has filed also points out that she had to miss work because of some health conditions but that the university refused to allow her to take a leave of absence under the FMLA, which is the Family Medical Leave Act.
