target_160x120Retail chain Target has launched a $100 million distribution center in Newton, North Carolina that has created 500 local jobs.

The area had a 15.5% unemployment rate in June. More than 14,000 people applied for the 500 positions.

The distribution center serves 80 Target stores in North and South Carolina and neighboring states.

Newton is a city located in Catawba County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 12,560.

The Target Corporation is an American retailing company founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1902 as the Dayton Dry Goods Company. In 1962, the first Target store opened in Roseville, Minnesota, and in 2000 the company changed its name from Dayton Hudson to Target. Target Corporation has units in every state except Vermont, operating under the mastheads of Target, Target Greatland, and SuperTarget.
