marylandflag_160x120Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley signed into law a package of bills it is hoped will spur job growth in the Free State.

Under the law, Maryland businesses will receive a $5,000 tax credit for each unemployed worker it hires. O’Malley notes that combined with a $1,000 tax credit passed by Congress for the same action “offers even more encouragement for businesses to hire.”

The bills package also reforms the state’s depleted unemployment insurance fund and makes Maryland eligible for $127 million in federal stimulus funds, the Baltimore Sun reports. Additionally, car manufacturers will now be allowed to pay bonuses to retail dealers.
