BLS: 5.4 Applicants for Each Job in April

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports 5.4 job seekers nationwide for every employment opening in April.

That’s up from 4.8 workers in March, and 1.7 workers in December 2007.

The labor department says the pace of payroll job cuts has lessened over the last three months. But unemployment nationally has continued to rise, up to 9.4% in May.
