For recent college graduates, it can definitely be hard finding employment. The truth is, the economy is still suffering from the turmoil and panic along with the recession which left millions of people unemployed and without a means of supporting themselves. It is definitely still a tough time to be a college graduate as competition for employment is much stiffer than it once was.

However, there is a particular major that can almost guarantee a job upon graduation but you definitely have to be willing to get through the courses. Most people know of Mark Zuckerberg, famously known for being the creator of Facebook. While he founded and created Facebook, he did attend Harvard but actually dropped out due to the success of the website.

While Zuckerberg dropped out, there are tons of people who are making attempts to take the same college courses Zuckerberg did, on computer science skills, to help them acquire the skills they need to have a lot of success in the field. There are plenty of jobs for computer science which is probably one of the reasons this major is becoming so increasingly popular. And, with a bunch of job opportunities available, lots of pre-graduates are receiving employment offers from an assortment of different companies.

In fact, an NYU computer science graduate, Tal Safron, has said, “I’d say about 10 companies have reached out to me just before graduating.” AdityaMukerjee, a computer science senior at Columbia has also said, “”Most of my friends who are computer science students do have the same similar feeling. They’re not really worried about jobs.”

It makes sense, especially since UMass-Amherst has seen a growth of 58 percent for students who are taking computer science as their major. This growth has taken place since 2007, when the economy was just beginning to cripple. Students with computer science majors who graduated in 2011 seemed to do the best with the job market and scoring a job immediately upon graduation. At least 56 percent of these students received offers of employment before they even graduated from college. For the average individual who is starting a job in the computer science field, the salary will typically begin at $66,000 but can obviously be much more than that, especially after the student gets his or her feet wet.

Korth says, “Many students, whether they are computer science students, are now starting to understand that coding is the literacy of the future and they want to get in on that.” Coding is complex; it is like learning a foreign language. It is definitely not for everyone but for those who understand it, it can be useful. Korth says, “I get an email every day asking me if I have a student that can build X or build Y.”
