UTMBMonths after laying off thousands of employees because of damage from Hurricane Ike, the University of Texas Medical Branch has rehired more than 500, and plans to hire hundreds more new workers.

The state’s oldest medical school had rehired 415 employees as of March 3rd. UTMB seeks to fill another 239 positions, mostly nursing, clinical and research jobs.

Another 40 positions have been filled in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice unit, fulfilling a state contract to treat inmates.

Officials are giving priority to the 2,450 employees who lost their jobs after the hurricane, which caused $710 million in damage to the facility in September.
